Kripalu is a magical place if you just let yourself immerse in all that’s around you! I was fortunate enough to be apart of the mindful masculinity programs and was it life changing. The staff, the teachers and the people who might have been on another journey than ours were so welcoming.
This place honestly feels like summer camp for adults. I meditated, did yoga, danced, and made a lot of friends in the process. The food and accommodation are suitable, but nothing special. The staff (Michelle and Chris = goats), the dance classes, and the views were all spectacular. I definitely hope to come back soon.
I treated myself to an R & R Retreat for Mother's Day weekend. I arrived on Friday at 2p and my room was not ready. The gentleman that checked me in was very nice and did his best to assure me that my room was being prepared. Him and another representative encouraged me to walk around and directed me to explore. After a 4 hour drive, i just wanted to settle in and lay down. An hour and a half later my room was ready. To say the least i was irritated. In my opinion, the food was subpar. So Friday i went to bed hungry. Saturday, breakfast was good. You really can't mess breakfast up. Lunch on Saturday was just , eh... and Saturday for dinner, i didn't even bother to go to the dining hall. I was supposed to stay for four days and leave on Tues. I woke up Sunday morning, packed my things and left before 7:30a. I stayed in the Annex. My private room was perfect for one person. Just know there is no AC or TV. I paid for Introduction to Ayurveda. I went Friday night and i enjoyed the class. I did not attend Saturday's classes and i left early Sunday morning and didn't attend that class. Because i left 2 days early, i have over $1000.00 credit. So i will absolutely use it and hope for a better experience.
I went for some R&R for my birthday in late May and had such a rejuvenating experience. The food was delicious, and there were plenty of vegan, vegetarian, and ayurvedic options. There were plenty of class options for mind, body and spirit. I really enjoyed the digital detox and that most others were respectful and did the same. The yoga classes were wonderful and the teachers were great at making sure that everyone felt comfortable doing only what felt good. All in all, it was exactly what I needed and look forward to going again.
The stars: The location, the hikes, and all yoga teachers I had were amazing! The food was good (most items needed added salt), plenty, and clean dining halls. Plenty of classes to choose from and to keep busy.
The minuses:
The front staff (at least the ones I encountered) were not knowledgeable on the programs and correct info. Also not helpful when I told them about my hot water wasn’t working and other issues I had. The website booking confirmation lacked the info about my room not having a private bathroom and therefore I was charged an additional $480 for 3 nights upon arrival! I did bring it up and was told to write it on a comment letter which I did.
Bottom line I think If you are alone and looking for an intimate and more personal experience with your R and R this is not for you since this is a huge school like complex (as someone else mentioned on the reviews)
However, if you are with a friend or a group and want to take some time off and do some yoga and hikes this would be a great time. If I go again I would not stay there, I would just take a day pass to enjoy the classes.
Life changing, I participated in the mindful masculinity program this week and I’m a grateful man, I left this place more limber and more informed on how to handle conflict and interactions with other men.
If I could give these people zero stars, I would. My latest fiasco was I was trying to give a gift card online through their website. Everything appeared to be going smoothly until the payment processing return the message that says it failed. So I carefully re-entered all the information thinking I had missed keyed it on the first attempt No such luck the second attempt failed.
So I attempted to call them To make sure the gift card had been processed. I called nine times and the line was busy. On the 10th try I went to voicemail which stated their business hours are Monday through Friday.. It’s Sunday, so why was the line busy nine previous tries?
In the meantime, I checked my credit card website And saw there were four pending transactions for Kripalu!
My previous experiences with the Staff left me with a feeling that talk to two different staff members and you’ll get three different stories on how things work. So I thought using their online system would be an improvement. I should have known better.
I’m torn between giving it a 2 and a 3: food was delicious, beds were comfy, classes varied - the Ayurveda yoga was great, all the rest were just so so, and the worst thing…the constant chatter! There was no silence in any of the common areas. In search of peace, I found the technology lounges to be the quietest rooms! Throughout the building, people were on their phones or had them on, so dings were going off during classes! It was more of a white women’s wellness resort, not a retreat center :(
